A Rejoinder To A Pagan Bristling That Some Do Not Worship His Ba'al 'Mahatma Gandhi' Empty A Rejoinder To A Pagan Bristling That Some Do Not Worship His Ba'al 'Mahatma Gandhi'

Vijay Dandapani wrote an article on Rediff.com (http://us.rediff.com/news/2006/feb/09guest.htm) objecting to the King of Saudi Arabia AND U.S. President George W. Bush NOT worshipping at the funerary monument of Mahatma Gandhi.

"When asked by reporters on a recent trip aboard Air Force One if he will be breaking a decades long tradition of foreign dignitaries visiting India paying respect to the Father of India, Mr Bush mumbled something about how the Gospel of Jesus Christ views cremation as a pagan practice."

For this reason, "George W. Bush's protocol handlers have notified South Block that the American President's deep belief in his Born Again faith precludes his visiting Mahatma Gandhi's Samadhi at New Delhi's Raj Ghat during his forthcoming visit to India."

This, according to Vijay Dandapani, is a "blatant insult to the memory of the Mahatma and to all Indians."

Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, King of Saudi Arabia, not only broke a hallowed tradition of paying homage at Raj Ghat observed by every foreign leader but offered an outrageously preposterous reason for doing so: a visit to the Mahatma's memorial would violate the principles of his faith. By inference, India's President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a Muslim, should be guilty of sacrilege for his many visits to the Samadhi.

According to Dandapani, "such an egregious folly, headlines would (should) have" provoked "Leftist organs about India's sovereignty and ancient history being trampled upon by ugly colonialists who still seek to subjugate India economically and culturally, if not militarily. Instead, what ensued were a few tame reports that acknowledged the radically changed protocol. Of course, the king's (and Pres. Bush's) arrival in India saw a continuance of the cravenness that resulted in the timid acceptance of the insult."

Commentary by Lucio Mascarenhas

First of all, I thank Dandapani for having brought to my attention that there are at least some persons who have the moral courage and gumption to refuse to worship Mahatma Gandhi, or to kowtow to India's hypocritical cult of this arch-hypocrite!

Secondly, India is constitutionally a secular state. Worship at Gandhi's memorial is not an obligatory rite.

Thirdly, Dandapani assumes too much when he affirms that refusal to worship Gandhi is an "insult to all Indians."

It may be an insult to all those who are followers of Gandhi's hypocrisies, but to tacitly affirm, as does Dandapani, that every Indian is a follower of Gandhi and his hypocries, is beyond his competence.

Fourthly, I fail to see how the Americans and Arabians can have any obligation to the cult of Gandhi, or how their refusal to commit idolatry with Gandhi and his funeral monument constitutes a "blatant insult" to "the memory of Gandhi" who constantly disclaimed and special status for himself, stressing that he is not God.

Fifthly, it may have escaped Dandapani that both Pres. Bush AND the Saudi King gave precisely the same reason for the same refusal: Doctrinal incompatibility with their personal beliefs. However, I rather suspect that Dandapani is merely indulging in the old tradition of hypocrisy by attempting or pretending that the two reasons are different in nature.
